Honoring a lost tradition
If you’re going to build it, build it right
Remember when our our parents’ parents handed down furniture to our parents? As kids, we jumped on, jumped over, and dangled from these solid pieces that withstood the test of time. We colored on them, scratched them, and stretched them to the limit on a daily basis, and still they stood (a little beat up, maybe), but they stood, strong. These were family heirlooms, built to grow from generation to generation. That is the foundation of Cocoongoods.
Children’s furniture had become something to fill a short term need and last just long enough. With each new growth phase, out with old and in with the new. Disposable furniture, built from cheap materials, carelessly made and so worn out in such a short amount of time, there was no other place for it to end up but a landfill. Meaningful heirloom furniture had been forgotten.
To honor the tradition of the heirloom, we returned to our roots. Carefully designed with attention to detail, our founder went to work, designing and building pieces that would last a lifetime. Our promise to our children (and our children’s children and so on) is sustainably sourced materials, built with care, and held to the strictest standards. Furniture that not only lasts, but is imbued with transparency and trust.
Our founder – Rachel Dacks
Hard work has never phased Rachel Dacks. It’s in her bones–whether she’s raising her children, designing, woodworking, or throwing down at the crossfit gym. She’s never shied away from a little sweat, blood, or tears (and there’s been a lot of all of them!) That’s why she is a pioneer in the Craft Woodworking space – a rare female voice in the children’s furniture industry.
Rachel was one of the early female graduates of the School for American Crafts at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), earning her BFA in Woodworking & Furniture Design. She then went on to earn her MFA in Furniture Design from Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD), one of the most prestigious design schools in the world. She has lead projects for Target, Summer Infant, Good Baby, Babies R Us, Buy Buy Baby, and WalMart.
Her experience has gained her an unmatched understanding of the children’s furniture industry, which led her to dream up Cocoongoods and on to design, craft, and produce our line of products. She takes pride in all that she does, and you can clearly see that in every detail of our Cocoon line.
We care about your children’s safety and the legacy we’re leaving them at home and throughout the planet. We believe in full transparency with our products and processes so that you trust what you’re getting, how it got to you, and the costs–both financial and environmental–involved.
All of our wood is either near-sourced domestic or FSC-certified premium hardwood and plywood. Every part of our products are ethically made in the USA by highly skilled craftsmen under fair labor practices.Your trust is important to us. When you buy a Cocoongoods product, you’re making a conscious choice to support future generations, a choice you can be proud of.
